A Little About Historic Downtown Americus
Historic downtown Americus is a classic example of the fanciful Victorian commercial architecture of the 1880's and gay 1890's blended with a touch of the 1920's. Designated a Georgia Main Street City in 1983, an on-going revitalization program lends to the vibrance of the central business district. Antique stores, gift shops, art galleries, specialty shops, taste-tempting eateries, and financial and governmental services are just some of the features of downtown Americus. A traditional blend of goods and services is available to shoppers; the small town custom of personal service thrives. This diversified blend assures that you’ll always find action and true southern hospitality in downtown Americus.

Founded in 1832, Americus was a major cotton center in its early days and was the site of three hospitals for confederate soldiers during the War Between the States. At one time, Americus was the eighth largest city in Georgia and one of the first to utilize electric street cars. The historic district has over 370 structures located within its boundaries. Currently, there are over 150 operating businesses in the downtown area. A driving, walking, and trolley tour of the beautiful historic district including the downtown as well as majestic homes featuring Victorian, Greek Revival, and Craftsman cottage styles are available for your enjoyment.

Time stands still when you visit Georgia’s Victorian Secret, The Windsor Hotel. The hotel’s towers, turrets, and terra cotta ornamentation on the exterior is spectacular. The lobby, a three-tiered open atrium, is filled with carved, golden oak and marble. The Windsor first opened in 1892 and was restored to its original beauty and reopened in 1991. This classic southern hotel offers the finest modern amenities to its guests. Located on the ground floor of the hotel is the Americus-Sumter Welcome Center, which is filled with history, information, and hospitality.

Another downtown Americus landmark is the Rylander Theatre that was closed for over 40 years. The theatre is one of the most extraordinary theatre restorations in the country. It provides audiences with a glimpse into the past and the future as well.
